Energy Centre closed
Founders Park has received a big blow, with its largest function room now closed, due to its risk to occupants in an earthquake. But the good news, is that work to strengthen it will only take two months. The Energy Centre hosts several major events in Nelson, including the recently finished Founders Book Fair, Marchfest and it is also used during the Nelson Arts Festival. Confirmation of the closure was made late yesterday afternoon by Nelson City Council chief executive Clare Hadley and is another blow to event organisers in the region. It joins the Trafalgar Centre as a major function venue closed due to its risk in the event of a major earthquake. The Nelson Hospitality Awards is one of three functions that has already been told it will have to find a new venue because of the

closure. Its organisers are expecting around 350 people and said the closure has “created a big problem”. “Because of the numbers, it creates a headache. There are only a handful of venues that can cater for 200-plus people and it’s now incredibly short notice for us. We had already ordered our tickets, hired tables and seats and picked out decorations. So it’s not ideal,” says one of the event’s organisers. Clare says the cost to bring the Energy Centre up to earthquake standard isn’t high, but a report noting the closure will be presented at the council’s works and infrastructure committee meeting this Thursday. She says the building will be open before the Nelson Arts Festival in October.

No day like a snow day It was a bluebird day at the More FM Rainbow Family Snow Day over the weekend. Delighted children gathered around the games tent for snow bulls-eye, a lolly scramble, sledding, and tug of war games at Rainbow Ski Area. The weather also made for optimal snow machine conditions, and vice chair of the ski area, Hamish Neill, says punters enjoyed the most man made snow ever created there due to the combination of cold nights and fine days.
“A bonus, because it’s more durable than natural snow and as a result more people come up.” He says the remainder of winter is also looking good weather wise and the timing couldn’t be better as it coincides with Rainbow Sports Club’s 10th year celebration of owning and operating Rainbow Ski Area. The next event to look forward to is the Summit Batty Rainbow Club Champs on August 9.

Three-hundred people have applied to work at The Warehouse in Richmond, however most of the job hunters will be unsuccessful. The Warehouse will employ around 70 team members at its peak for the store and Simon Turner, CEO of The Warehouse confirmed that 300 people had applied for jobs at the store and they are no longer looking to further recruit staff. The 3500m2 store will open on Queen St on August 28, and all of the building work is on track for its opening. The Warehouse will be part of the Gibbons development project which also includes Kmart, Couplands, Benge & Co, Columbus Coffee and Aki Sushi. There will also be another yet-be-announced retailer on site.

Nelson’s fishing community paused for a few hours on Saturday to remember the lives of those who have been lost at sea but then it was all hands back on deck as the hoki season gets off to another “very good” start. A big crowd lined the Port Nelson waterfront for Saturday’s annual Blessing of the Fleet, which is both a poignant memorial and a blessing for people from around the NelsonTasman region who will work at sea this season. The annual ceremony started on Friday night with a fireworks display and continued on Saturday when a fleet of fishing boats, offshore from Wakefield Quay, was blessed by Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father David Gruscol. The blessing was followed by a fresh fish market and a display by the Coastguard while spectators enjoyed fish and chips cooked by Nelson Rotarians. Seafarers Memorial Trust chairman and event organiser, Mike Smith, says he was delighted with the ceremony, which is not only a time for people to reflect on the tragedy of lives lost at sea but also

What would you like to see on Rocks Rd? Nelsonians can have their say about the proposed promenade along Rocks Rd after councillors unanimously agreed to send two concepts out for consultation. But that’s where the agreement on the plans ended, with several councillors voicing their opposition to it, saying the road is too busy and dangerous for a cycling walkway to work effectively. Counillors Ian Barker, Paul Matheson and Eric Davy all said they had concerns about the proposal, but sending the options to the community was the best way to gauge public opinion. The promenade could see a three to four metre wide pathway on the sea side of Rocks Rd that could be used by cyclists, walkers and joggers. Both of the options going out for consultation will see a loss of car parks and the introduction of five pedestrian crossings along

For Concept Two, the estimated cost is approximately $11-15 million, with $2.5-3.5 million from the council. A third plan will also be released so people can have more information about the process, but it has already been ruled out because it comes with a $34-47 million price tag. Councillors Matt Lawry, Luke Ackland, Kate Fulton, Pete Rainey and Mike Ward all spoke enthusiastically about
the plan, with Mike saying he’d noticed more cyclists in Nelson over the past decade. “It’s an exciting opportunity and I’m supporting it whole-heartedly.” Deputy mayor Paul Matheson said the traffic issues are not being addressed in the plan. “The traffic will be slower, it will be interrupted, those living along Rocks Rd and in any form of accommodation will find a greater impact from that traffic because of reduced parking and a narrower road. There will be larger trucks and more of them. These issues need to be talked about now.” Mayor Rachel Reese says she has some “serious concerns” about the compromises in the plans but she supports hearing feedback from the public. Sugary drinks banned Locally Owned and Operated
All “sugary drinks” will be banned from Nelson City Council venues and events, the first time a council in New Zealand has imposed such a ban. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese made the announcement at the Local Government national conference, held in Nelson over the weekend. The sugar-free drinks policy means that all venues like Riverside Pool, Founders and the council buildings will be free of sugary drinks. As will events it manages, like the masked parade, Ecofest, Opera in the Park and Isel in Bloom. Nelson City Council is the first council in the country to implement a sugar-free drinks policy and comes months after the Nelson
Marlborough District Health Board became the first health board in the country to do the same. Rachel says type two diabetes, childhood obesity and dental disease are major issues in New Zealand, and have a significant impact on our community. “It is now widely recognised by health professionals that sugary drinks are one of the major contributors to the problem, and that reducing consumption and helping our young people to make better choices is a key strategy for improving health outcomes,” she says. To help drive the message home, the council is partnering with Nelmac and the district health board to provide free water, via a giant water tanker, at all council events.

Light Nelson has a ‘bright future’ The trust behind Light Nelson will expand the event next year, creating more space to ensure it can cope with its rapidly-growing demand. Around 40,000 people attended Light Nelson last weekend, with an incredible 30,000 of those trying to get into Queen’s Gardens on the Sunday. Because wet weather forced Friday night to be canned, it seems the majority of event-goers waited until the last and clearest opportunity to go. That caused long queues throughout the gardens, with many people venting their frustration on the Nelson Weekly Facebook page that the event simply couldn’t cope with the demand. Following it, Light Nelson Trust chair Brian Riley said that there was no way they expected 24,000 more people than the year before, espe-
cially when the most popular night in 2013 only attracted 5000 people. This week, Brian is saying the event will expand outside the Queens Gardens. “Absolutely. The fact we’ve had such a fantastic response and turnout means we are now fast tracking our vision to the future,” he says. That vision should see Light Nelson extend along the Maitai, through town and could even include parts of Tahunanui or around the port. There were calls for the event to be extended after Friday’s cancellation, but Brian says it was not logistically possible because there were too many artists that had to be back at work on Monday. And while there were some moans and groans from Sunday’s experience, Brian was pleased with the massive support the event has had.

‘Menzshed’ needs... a shed
A “Menzshed” for Nelson is ready to go – apart from one key ingredient, a building. Since promoting an initial meeting to gauge interest two months ago, the organisers of the Nelson Menzshed have voted in a board, collected dozens of names from those who are keen to be involved and have even been offered trailer loads of tools and machinery. The one piece of the puzzle missing is a place for the group to call home. Menzshed is a community organisation that has chapters through New Zealand and Australia. It allows men from the community to come in and use tools in the shed for various projects. It’s particularly popular with older men who may have downsized their home and no longer have a back shed of their own.

In fact, one of the men behind trying to establish a Menzshed in Nelson, Graeme O’Brien, says he has been offered a whole shed full of tools from someone in that exact position. “He’s older and is rattling around in a big house so is looking to downsize, but would like to see his tools go to a good home.” A Menzshed started in Richmond several years ago and has been a smash hit, with a huge membership and thriving shed. Graeme says he’s keen to hear of anyone with ideas on where the Nelson Menzshed could go. He says they’ll need a space big enough to fit all the tools and workspace and it couldn’t be in a quiet residential area because they will make some noise. Tadmor residents are trying to buy back their 100 year old church and cemetery, before it’s sold and turned into a house. The residents – most of them are farmers – formed the Tadmor Church Society, and are hoping to raise $35,000 in order to keep the church and burial ground open to the community. The church services stopped about 20 years ago, and the building has predominantly been used for weddings and funerals since then. It’s currently owned by the Anglican Diocesan Trust who received an offer from a potential buyer. But, with some public pressure, they have agreed to sell it to the society if they can raise $35,000 before October. The society has already managed to raise $15,000 and chairman Bruce Moffitt, whose grandfather donated the land which the church is built on in 1914, wants it to remain in the community. “Originally the land was given to them by

fUEl ThEfTS: In recent months a number of fuel thefts within the Nelson area have police worried, especially after one theft resulted in the death of the family’s pet Labrador. Between April and the start of July there have been 50 fuel thefts reported from Richmond to Motueka and police would like to speak with anyone who has information on the incidents.
NEw vENUE for EcofEST: Ecofest is this year partnering with Growables gardening show at Founders Heritage Park to create a bumper day of “green” activities, products, services and produce for Nelsonians. Formerly held at the Trafalgar Centre, this year’s Ecofest has been repackaged to include a one day expo in both Nelson and Motueka, along with a series of interesting seminars and hands-on workshops. Councillor Brian McGurk says the objective of Ecofest is to create community awareness of cost-effective and environmentally friendly services available in the Our region. Pam says the concert will be a special performance of music written by those who died in World War One. “The music
is not particularly well-known, but it is lovely and written by men who gave their lives.” The concert will also feature some poetry written by soldiers and starts at 7.30pm in Old St John’s this Saturday night. You’ve nominated who you think does it best, now it’s time to vote. The 2014 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are the most prestigious local awards the industry has and recognises the best in the hospitality business. This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes. The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! Simply fill in who you want to win, cut out the form and drop it off to either newspaper office in Selwyn Pl, Nelson or Salisbury Rd, Richmond. Or send
it to Nelson Hospitality Awards, PO Box 503 Wellington. Voting will close at 12 noon on Friday 8 August, so get your entry form in before then. The winners will be announced at the biannual New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards event to be held on Monday 25 August, venue to be confirmed. Tickets will be on sale at Hardys Bar. The ticket price will be $65, which includes drinks served and a three course dinner.
You can vote in as many categories as you wish, only one vote per category. Voting closes Friday 8 August at 12 noon. Voting forms must be clipped from the paper, no photocopies accepted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Sponsors, their employees and immediate families may vote but are ineligible to win a prize.

Nelson wins national futsal tournament
Nelson’s 12th grade futsal team are national champions. Nelson Bays Football sent three age group sides to the tournament in Wellington, where the 12th grade side finished on top. The 14th grade side lost to the eventual winners in the semifinals and the 16th grade side missed out on a spot in the final on goal difference only, after finished second-equal after pool play.
Futsal is a five-a-side game played on a small indoor court. NBF general manager Clive Beaumont says he was thrilled with the success and says it’s especially remarkable considering Nelson doesn’t even have a junior futsal league. “These boys got together for four weeks of training and were playing against teams that play week in, week out.” All of the Nelson sides were
coached by Ben Wright, and Clive says he’s hoping to have a junior futsal league established in term 4 of this year. “Futsal certainly develops football skills much faster and it’s now an internationally recognised code in its own right. It's huge in places like Spain and Brazil.” Van Rolan Hlawnceu, who played in Nelson’s 16th grade team, was voted as player of the tournament.
Over the last few weeks or so the weather has hampered getting out fishing with few reports coming in, so I thought it might be a good chance to remind everyone of some basic safety precautions and how to develop your own critical checklist before heading out boating. Whenever you are going out on the water, make sure people are aware where you are going and, more importantly, when you intend to be back. That way, friends and family won’t get unnecessarily worried and contact authorities causing, in some cases, expensive and time consuming searches to be mounted. It pays to prepare a Two Minute form that has the details of your vessel, where you are going boating and when you are returning. Give it to someone who can contact the authorities if you don’t return by your scheduled time-then someone can contact the Coastguard. Make sure you wear the appropriate clothing when going boating. Always wear a lifejacket when you go boating and always wear clothing that is appropriate for the conditions. A rule of thumb is that you should go for several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thick layer (thinner, multi layers trap air and retains heat better). You can always remove a layer if you get too
warm. When going boating you must carry some form of communication device in case you get into difficulty. It is important when going boating that you carry at least two forms of communication. You never know when you might need to contact someone in a hurry. By far the best form of communication is a marine VHF radio. When you use a VHF radio it can be picked up by a range of different people at once, whereas a cellphone will only be picked up by one person. If you have a cellphone, then make sure that it is in a waterproof plastic bag. You should also carry flares in a waterproof canister to make it easier for people to find you. When going boating, it’s always a good idea to make sure your crew knows where all the safety equipment is and what they should do in case of an emergency. Check the weather forecast. Also, a really good idea is to develop a pre-launch checklist for your boat. It’s easy to forget or miss things when you go boating. You get caught up in the excitement of a day out on the water. There are lots of things you need to remember – such as ensuring you have enough food for the day, selecting the right sort of bait and making sure you know the route to get to where you're going.
